Why did you choose to do a PhD?

Research is always something I have been passionate about, and I knew that I wanted to advance my skills further after completing my masters degree. Through a PhD, I hope to deepen my understanding of my research field, contribute new knowledge and/or applications of existing methods, and gain technical and transferable skills.

Why did you choose to do graduate education at NUS? If you received offers from other universities, why did you pick NUS?

I joined NUS as a research staff prior to my PhD, which led me to meeting my thesis adviser. I was also fortunate to receive a full scholarship from the university, which was a key factor for me when deciding where to pursue a PhD.

Briefly share about your research or thesis (i.e. dissertation topic for Masters by Coursework students).

My thesis explores various methods of managing uncertainty in oncology drug evaluations (HTA) as well as ways to manage uncertainty in real-world practice. It uses both qualitative and quantitative methods across a series of interrelated studies applied in the area of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.

What impact do you hope to have with your research?

The research can contribute to methodological advancement of cancer HTAs and improve the practice of drug evaluations. I also hope that findings from the studies can help inform clinical and policy decisions involving the use cancer drugs, making them more accessible to patients who need them.

Share something about campus life at NUS that new students would be interested to hear about.

As I started my PhD journey during the height of the pandemic, I had very little opportunity to explore the campus and meet classmates. Now that restrictions have eased, I am glad to be meeting my classmates and professors face-to-face. Remember that a lot of the growth and learning takes place outside of the lecture halls. I also look forward to trying out more local food through the different canteens and dining spots on campus!
