Seeking all Faculties/Schools keen on collaborating with leading employers to prepare their PhD students for R&D roles in the industry!

NUS Graduate School is excited to announce the launch of “NUS Graduate School Partnership with Industry Scheme for Graduate Research Talent (The NUSGS π Scheme)” beginning from AY2022/2023, 1 August!

Objective

(i) To build a pool of postgraduate manpower with critical R&D skillsets in preparation for R&D roles in the industry.

(ii) Through improving Singapore's R&D workforce, bolster our nation's position as a top knowledge-based economy.

Learning Intentions

(i) PhD Students (Singapore Citizens, Singapore PRs & International Students) under the NUSGS π Scheme will be full-time employees of a Singapore-based R&D laboratory of a company or government entity.

(ii) They will pursue their postgraduate research part time in NUS on a project developed in collaboration with their company.

(iii) They will be co-advised by an NUS faculty and a qualified senior R&D staff from their company.

Eligibility Criteria for Companies

Company must:

(i) Be registered and operating in Singapore,

(ii) Have the capacity and ability to scope and see the research project through to its implementation, e.g. assigning qualified R&D leaders to supervise the project and

(iii) Have the financial ability and commitment to support the PhD trainee for the entire duration of his/her candidature attachment.

Financial Support to be Provided by Companies

(i) Monthly salary for PhD trainee (Determined by Company)

(ii) Full unsubsidized tuition fees of PhD trainee

Support shall span a duration of 4 years, with possible extension for a 5th year.

Roles of the Faculty Member

The Faculty Member and Co-Advisor from the company will jointly:

(i) Scope the research project, to ensure its relevance to the need of the company and to ensure it has sufficient depth and complexity to advance the field

(ii) Mentor the trainee, to guide his intellectual growth into a successful research scientist/engineer.

(iii) Promote conditions conducive to the trainee’s research.

(iv) Evaluate the progress of the trainee’s research, providing appropriate guidance and encouragement in a timely manner.

Both the Faculty Member and Co-Advisor from the company should have clear research track records, be active in their fields, have sufficient time to provide adequate supervision and advice, demonstrate genuine interest in the research project, provide mentorship, and have a supportive personality.
