"Enrich your graduate life by taking part outside the lab or office, enjoy your hobbies, and meet new people."

On hindsight, would you still have chosen NUS to do your PhD?

Life is excellent on this quintessential campus designed to make student life very enriching. The collaborative spirit of NUS has allowed me to work across departments and get a thorough, holistic understanding of my topic. With talented faculty and students from around the world, there are always interesting activities on campus (personally and professionally).

Suggest 2 or 3 things that graduate students should do to prepare for their professional careers?

Students need to be very proactive about their education and seek out other faculty members from diverse fields to learn from experts with whom they can talk about their goals. This will helps to explore their passion for an academic or non-academic career path. Secondly, graduate students should keep looking at the array of opportunities that a university offers like a career fair, entrepreneurship support, exchange studentship and workshops on writing proposals and teachings, etc.

Briefly share something fun in your graduate journey at NUS that you remember

I had a great time at NUS, but watching Singapore (Schooling’s) Gold Medal at Olympic in the middle of the lecture, and I screened that for everyone (obviously with permission of the professor). Isn’t that amazing!!

Any other words of wisdom to share?

Despite what you might think, the graduate study is not about spending time in the lab and publishing manuscripts. Enrich your graduate life by taking part outside the lab or office, enjoy your hobbies, and meet new people. Most important don’t be afraid to ask for help from your friends and supervisor if you ever feel overworked, stressed, or just in need of advice.
