Why Did You Choose To Pursue A PhD?

PhD is a good opportunity for me to learn advanced knowledge about data science, and also can train me to think in a rigorous way.

Why Did You Choose To Pursue Your PhD At NUS?

Singapore is famous for its open arm and equal opportunities for foreign students. As a top university in Asia, NUS can provide top-class resources to learn data science.

Can you tell us briefly about your research topic?

My research is about applying data-driven methods in business research questions, like how to help companies conduct promotions, save operational costs, etc.

Why did you choose to do this research for your PhD?

I am keen on data science and wondering if I can apply data-driven methods in business research to bring some change.

How does PhD graduate education compare with your undergraduate experience?

In PhD, I learn with interest as well as a more clear objective. I can focus my energy on a specific area and dive deeper.

What do you like most about graduate school?

When I get stuck with some problems, I can always discuss freely with my supervisor and coauthors. They are always ready to help.

What challenges have you faced during your stint as a PhD student?

Research is not easy by itself. It took energy to catch up with a good idea and prove it works well.

Any highlights you'd like to share with us about your PhD life?

NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences & Engineering (NGS) and Institute of Data Science (IDS) provide integrated resources from almost all disciplines in Science and Technology. This enables me to consider my research question in a broader view, and come up with more innovative ideas.

Can you tell us something fun about your PhD journey in NUS?

When I find a smart way to solve a research question, it is always an enjoyment to present it to my supervisor and coauthors.

Any advice for someone who's considering a PhD in NUS?

Do research for fun. Communicate your ideas or doubts with your supervisor freely and in an efficient manner.
