Why Did You Choose To Pursue A PhD?

PhD is about discovering new knowledge and developing new skills. There is no available answer for the research and you have to discover it on your own.

Why Did You Choose To Pursue Your PhD At NUS?

The professors in NUS are prominent and responsible. Their enthusiasm, valuable guidance, and insightful criticism drive students to a greater improvement in research ability.

Can you tell us briefly about your research topic?

I’m a PhD student in the department of statistics and applied probability and my research is about studying the asymptotic theories in statistics.

How does PhD graduate education compare with your undergraduate experience?

The experience is completely different. During the undergraduate study, you learn the knowledge from textbooks, professors, and peers. However, during the PhD study, you create new knowledge based on what people have done previously.

What do you like most about graduate school?

The department will organize seminars almost every week, and the speakers will share their insights and ideas with the audience.

What challenges have you faced during your stint as a PhD student?

The challenge I face during my PhD study is my math background is a little bit weak, and I need to self-study math materials in order to catch up.

Can you tell us something fun about your PhD journey in NUS?

In our department, the professors and PhD students play badminton every week, which is a very nice leisure activity.

Any advice for someone who's considering a PhD in NUS?

If someone wants to do PhD as NUS, please make sure that you are really interested in research, because you will face lots of humps during the research study.
