Why did you choose to do a PhD?

In the field of biological sciences, PhD is an entry level requirement for proper career development.

Why did you choose to do graduate education at NUS? If you received offers from other universities, why did you pick NUS?

I was obligated to serve out a bond in Singapore. Between NUS and NTU at that time in the field of biomedical sciences, NUS has better infra-structure and support in the eco-sphere of NUS, Biopolis and hospitals. Ultimately it is down to the choice and choosing of the right supervisor.

Briefly share about your research or thesis (i.e. dissertation topic for Masters by Coursework students).

We were one of the first few groups to have profiled for and reported microRNA deregulation in hepatocellular carcinoma. We subsequently characterized microRNA-224 and let-7 deregulation in HCC to understand why these microRNAs were aberrantly expressed and what consequences these aberrantly expressed microRNA bring to the carcinogenesis process.

What impact do you hope to have with your research?

It has always been my goal to bring the research findings from the bench to actual use in real life settings, to actually improve the clinical outcome of patients. This is also why I started my own company working on early cancer screening.
