Brief Description of Research:
As one of the world’s leading academic experts in global production networks research, my research interests cover broadly theories and the geography of transnational corporations, global production networks and global value chains, East Asian firms and developmental states in the global economy. To date, I have published 6 monographs (5 single-authored) and 1 textbook (3 editions), 7 edited books, over 100 journal articles, and 50 book chapters. My most recent books are Interconnected Worlds: Global Electronics and Production Networks in East Asia (Innovation and Technology in the World Economy Series, Stanford University Press, contracted and full manuscript submitted for publication in late 2021), Strategic Coupling: East Asian Industrial Transformation in the New Global Economy (Cornell Studies in Political Economy Series, Cornell University Press, 2016), and Global Production Networks: Theorizing Economic Development in an Interconnected World (co-authored with Neil Coe; Oxford University Press, 2015). In December 2017, I was selected by the American Association of Geographers to receive the AAG Distinguished Scholarship Honors for 2018 “in recognition of his extraordinary scholarship and leadership in the discipline”. Earlier in June 2017, I was conferred the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) Murchison Award 2017 in the UK for “pioneering publications in the field of globalisation”. I was also a recipient of the inaugural University Research Recognition Award 2018 of the National University of Singapore, NUS Outstanding University Researcher Award (1998) and NUS Outstanding Researcher Award (2008). My work has been cited in over 4,000 publications abstracted in the ISI Web of Science indices and over 20,000 times in Google Scholar. 13 of my journal papers have each received over 100 citations in the WoS database.
