  1. Materials Science and Engineering is a dynamic, interdisciplinary field of research combining basic sciences with applied engineering. It strives to deepen a fundamental understanding of how structures and processes on atomic, nano-, and micro-scales lead to familiar engineering properties and functions.
  2. The interest in physical and chemical phenomena over large magnitudes of space and time scales differs from physics or chemistry where the emphasis is on explaining the properties of pure substances. We are able to develop novel methods to design materials by varying the compositions, the structures, and through the processing of bulk and surface phase materials during fabrication. This distinguishes Materials Science and Engineering from other branches of engineering where the emphasis is more on applications.
  3. Doctoral research represents a unique, individual contribution to a discipline, so each student’s work is different. It provides an opportunity for you to chase ideas, seek new knowledge, and turn your ideas into reality. Doctoral studies include taking several courses that lay the foundations for research. Students also attend and deliver seminars where current research is presented. A Comprehensive Exam, followed by a PhD qualifying examination, ensures that students are making headway. The research work, which forms the largest single component, culminates in a thesis that will be examined both orally and in writing. Click here for programme structure.
  4. Graduate students pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy programmes have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members on a wide variety of exciting research projects. Excellent opportunities are available for students to be immersed in a vibrant research-intensive environment.

  1. Materials Science at National University of Singapore is amongst the top in the world according to the QS World University Rankings by subject in 2018
  2. Materials Science and Engineering is a discipline that enables the creation and application of materials in society. New materials have always been among the greatest achievements of humans since the beginning of history. It is always advanced materials that open the door to new technologies and breakthroughs, whether they are in chemical, mechanical, aeronautical, energy, electrical, manufacturing industry, civil or biomedical engineering.
  3. We have been pursuing cutting-edge research in advanced materials and their applications and have been recognized worldwide as a premier Material Science Engineering department centered in Asia.

General Admission Criteria
CriteriaMinimum Score
GPAA Bachelor’s degree with honours (at least 2nd Class Upper) or its equivalent.
English Proficiency TestsTOEFL
Internet-based
85 / 120
IELTS6.0 / 9

GRE is optional. However, evidence of strong quantitative, verbal, and analytical skills through GRE scores, as well as indicators of research skills and experience will significantly strengthen your application.

Either TOEFL or IELTS is required for students whose main language of undergraduate university instruction is not English. Waivers may be granted to students who are native English speakers or proficient in English but are currently enrolled in a non-English medium university. Contact programme administrator to inquire. Test scores for the TOEFL and IELTS are valid for 2 years from the test dates. TOEFL and IELTS Academic scores that have expired by the time the application period closes will not be accepted.
