Candidates pursuing the programme will study the history of diverse cultures and societies across Asia and the world. They will also acquire in-depth knowledge of Singaporean history and understand the dynamic narratives that shape the nation-state’s national identity. The broad mix of courses will help to hone graduates’ cross-cultural empathies and tolerance for difference, enabling them to thrive in different cultural settings.

- We are one of the oldest and yet most vibrant departments in the National University of Singapore. From its genesis as Raffles College in 1929 and after a series of transformations through various subsequent university mergers, the Department has continued to grow in strength. Today, we maintain a worldwide reputation for teaching and research excellence and an impressive track record of producing successful graduates who can make their mark in the professional world.
- The Department offers training at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Each year approximately 5,000 undergraduates enroll in a slate of about 50 courses. There are currently more than 30 graduate students pursuing their Masters and Doctoral degrees. The Department’s teaching and research expertise lies primarily in the history of Southeast and East Asia, but there is a strong selection of course offerings in European, American, and military history, as well as the history of art, business, religion, science, and technology.
- Our faculty members are committed to teaching the content of history as well as the crucial research skills in critical reading, thinking, writing, and oral communication. They are very approachable and are dedicated to teaching history, and its importance in this contemporary era of globalization, to the university community and the general public.
