Description
Designed for all PhD students, this course introduces student to ethical issues in research. It provides an in-depth analysis of core topics, ethical research & decision making, research misconduct, plagiarism, conflicts of Interest, data management, authorship & publication, mentorship, collaboration, and the research environment
Students will be allowed to choose two elective topics based on their research needs. A case-study approach will serve as the basis for in-depth analysis. Each topic emphasizes the importance of promoting ethical conduct in research. A blended learning 2.0 pedagogical approach (https://cit.nus.edu.sg/blended-learning-2-0/) involving synchronous and asynchronous learning activities will be adopted.
Objectives
NUS is committed to ensuring that researchers act ethically in all research-related situations given the rise in fraudulent research cases around the world. Thus, in the formative years of a PhD, it is important for all graduate learners to learn the importance of ethics and integrity in research. By the end of the semester, students in this course should be able to:
- Identify ethical codes and principles
- Describe the ethical principles of research
- Adhere to ethical norms in the conduct of research
- Apply ethical principles in research-related situations
- Demonstrate reasoned judgment when making decisions in research-related situations
Assessment
NG5002 is a 6-week, fully online course based on the Blended Learning 2.0 model. Assessment will be based on quizzes/tests (30%) and class participation (group work for case presentation and discussion forum participation) (70%).
