Bio

Dr. Wentao Yan joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering NUS as an assistant professor in August 2018. Supported by multi-million grants, his research group with 20+ students focus on multi-scale multi-physics modeling, experimental investigation and data analysis of additive manufacturing. His team was the biggest winner in the 2022 NIST AM-Bench Simulation Challenges by winning 9 awards in the total 25 tests (totally 40 awards were presented). He has published >120 papers on flagship journals, such as Nature Communications, Acta Materialia, JMPS and CMAME, which have received over 6000 citations. He has delivered more than 100 invited talks on international conferences and prestigious universities. Over 20 of his former students have got faculty positions, including all the 12 former postdocs. Before joining NUS, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University and also a guest researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in the USA. He received his Ph.D. degree jointly at Tsinghua University, Beijing (09/2012-10/2014) and Northwestern University, USA (10/2014-03/2017). He got his Bachelor degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing in 2012.

My research is mainly focused on computational modeling, experimentation and data-analytics of additive manufacturing (AM), which is an interdisciplinary field of computational mechanics, advanced manufacturing, materials and data-analytics (e.g., uncertainty quantification, multi-objective optimization and surrogate modeling using machine learning). Currently, I am interested in the applications of AM in the areas like aerospace, electronics and bio-implants, so most of the materials in my research are metals and some are composites and polymers.
