Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship

The Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) Scholarship is synonymous with both prestige and a willingness to serve Singapore. Set up in 1991 by the Tanjong Pagar Citizens’ Consultative Committee with funding from the public to commemorate the contributions made by Mr Lee Kuan Yew to Singapore, it marks Singapore’s continuous effort to recognise outstanding individuals with the aptitude and inclination to contribute to our society. Since its inception, many Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship holders have gone on to make significant contributions across varied fields including the Public Service, business, law, medicine, the arts and academia.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholarship is the premier government scholarship awarded based on merit. The PSC Scholarships offer varied career pathways in the Public Service that will provide for a broad range of interests. Our scholarship holders are a diverse group of outstanding young talents who are all-rounded and committed to serving Singapore and Singaporeans. They excel in both academic and non-academic pursuits, possess sound character and exemplify the ethos of the Public Service.

No specific academic pre-requisites.

Other Eligibility Criteria

Applicants, who must be Singapore citizens, will be assessed holistically. This includes their track record of leadership and achievement in their fields of pursuit/professions.

Applicants should also have the potential to excel in their fields/professions, which will contribute to and benefit Singapore and our society.

*The typical award period for PhD Students are 4 years, Master's (Research) Students are 2 years.

*CPF will be given on top of the stipend amounts for Singapore Citizens.

Public sector awardees who are already sponsored by their agencies for their postgraduate studies will receive a one-off sum of S$10,000. They will not receive sponsorship of tuition fees and the annual allowance from the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship.

Service Bonds

While there is no bond associated with the Scholarship, Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship recipients are expected to actively contribute towards the betterment of Singapore and Singaporeans.

Other Terms and Conditions

The Scholarship will be renewed if the Recipient meets the following criteria:

  • Minimum GPA(coursework component) of 4.00;
  • Pass the PhD Qualifying Examination within the period stipulated by the faculty/school; and
  • Minimum research progress rating of ‘Very Good’ in each semester. (Note: If the rating is ‘Good’ for any semester, the Recipient will be issued a warning; and if
  • the Recipient again receives a rating of ‘Good’ for the immediately following semester, the Scholarship will then be terminated immediately without notice. Additionally, if the Recipient receives a rating below ‘Good’ for any semester, the Scholarship will be terminated immediately without notice.)

How to Apply?

Two reference letters are required to be submitted with the application. Nominated referees should be able to provide insights on your character, including leadership qualities and potential, resilience in overcoming adversity, and your drive and determination to excel in your field of pursuit or profession.
