What is Graduate Assistantship Programme (GAP)?

Students on Research Scholarships who are admitted from AY2014/2015 must complete work obligations by clocking up a certain number of work hours throughout their course of study.

 

The Graduate Assistantship Programme, also known as GAP, is mandatory for all international students who are on MOE-funded* scholarships. These international students will be charged a reduced tuition fee.

 

*MOE-funded refers to scholarships that are funded by the Ministry of Education in Singapore, including those funded by the MOE Research Scholarship Block (RSB), Academic Research Fund (AcRF),  Social Science Research Thematic Grant (SSRTG) and Social Science and Humanities Research Grant (SSHRG).

What are the different modes of clocking the GAP hours?

There are three (3) modes of clocking the GAP hours:

 

  • Teaching/Laboratory Supervision (min 20%)
  • Research Assistant (RA) duty, inclusive of research supervision (max 60%)
  • Other developmental assignments (max 20%)

 

Note: Hours fulfilled within each category, which is in excess of the maximum allowable hours for that category will not be counted towards fulfilment of the GAP requirement.

How many GAP hours does student need to fulfil?

Students must refer to the Terms & Conditions of their Research Scholarship. For partial scholarships, the proration will be made according to the number of semesters in which the scholarship is granted. Students may check with the respective Faculty/Department administrator.

When must students submit their GAP hours?

Students must submit their GAP hours and have them approved by the respective Work Supervisors during the following GAP hours reporting period:

 

  • Semester 1: From 4 September to 31 December
  • Semester 2: From 4 February to 31 July

Where should student report their GAP hours?

The GAP hours must be reported in myGAP system. Students can refer to Student User Guide. Staff can refer to Staff User Guide.

Can student receive remuneration for the hours clocked under GAP?

No, any work completed for the fulfilment of GAP hours requirement cannot be remunerated.

What happens if a student does not complete the GAP hours requirement?

The Faculty/School may:

 

  • Reduce or withhold the stipend and/or tuition fee subsidy.
  • Suspend/terminate the scholarship.
  • Withhold the transcript (both unofficial and official) and student status letter.
